R. Hell's Letter to His Elected Officials
the Week of Bush's Final Ultimatum to Iraq
Richard says: "It's quick and dirty, but I wanted to send something on paper this time (partly because I couldn't make it to the Union Square emergency rally). The versions to my Senators and Representative added these lines at the beginning: 'I am a registered Democrat and I just composed and sent the following letter to President Bush. I feel that to the extent that you are not expressing similar sentiments in Congress you are supporting his policies.' You can easily find the names and addresses of your elected officials by entering your address here."

President George W. Bush
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear President Bush:

I'm writing to express my extreme distress at the ways you have chosen to exercise your power. I believe your attack on Iraq is unconscionable. It is contrary to all standards of decency and contrary to the traditions of American freedom and justice for you as president to use your power and the immense power of the United States to impose the will of the present government administration on the rest of the world without true thought for anyone's welfare but the small segment of the United States that is your administration and its colleagues and confederates. I believe this is what is happening now. You are leading us, the United States, further into becoming the deeply feared threat to world peace that the terrorists portray us as being. I believe you are succeeding at this by your misrepresentation to Americans of the world political reality. It appears to me that you are behaving as a demagogue in a government that you wish to be a plutocracy. Attacking Iraq in the way you are doing it -- without persuasive evidence of the danger that country represents to us, but by using whatever rhetorical means your speechwriters can devise to justify your pre-existing determination to conquer that country -- will create rather than eleminate terrorists who will plot against the U.S.

Sincerely,

Richard Meyers
